I was out shopping today at my local grocery store and noticed there were a lot of natural products marked down. This, of course, got me pretty excited because a lot of organic, natural products come with a higher price tag.
It's very easy to get drawn into the attractive products with the “Natural” label, especially when they are marked down from $10.00 to $2.00. There were quite a few products that piqued my interest.
You know how many I actually purchased?
As I was browsing the natural shampoos, lip balms and lotions, I remembered I had downloaded an app recently from The Environmental Working Group. If you've been reading my posts for a while, you've probably heard me mention the EWG and their Skin Deep Database.
Skin Deep is a searchable database with over 68,000 consumer and cosmetic products. Each product is rated on a scale of 0-8 based on the safety of their ingredients. 0 being the safest and 8 being the most toxic.
I reference the database anytime I am interested in a new product or doing research for a blog post.
Skin Deep Mobile App (Free)
The Skin Deep Database is also now available as a free mobile app which I used for the first time today. You simply scan the bar code of your product and the Safety Rating & Ingredient list is displayed.
So instead of trusting the “Natural” label on the mark downs today, I was able to quickly learn which ones were rated the safest and which ones were not.
Of course this didn't leave me with many purchases, but I know I made the safest purchases possible.
I would highly recommend that you download the free app for your smartphone.
It is so important to question your product labels, research and make sure you are using the safest products available.
And this app makes it super easy to do this when you are out and about!
