When you think of taking your baby to the beach, how does it make you feel? Does it strike fear in your heart or do you get excited?
We are getting ready to head to the beach and I am SO excited! My daughter is 3 now and I am crossing my fingers that she will finally fall in love with the beach!
Last summer she hated the sand and the ocean. So we took a little pool to the beach with us so she could swim and not be knocked over by the waves. Well, it was great when she was in the pool, but when she got out and the sand started sticking to her wet legs… Oh. my. goodness. It was not good.
Go back one more year and she still hated the sand and the ocean PLUS she had a terrible diaper rash the whole week. I did finally find a fantastic DIY Diaper Rash Cream, but not until we got back from the beach…
So needless to say, taking a baby to the beach can be a challenge!
You are prepared for anything.
So I've put together my list of necessities for a stress free beach vacation with your little one!
Top 12 Must Haves for Taking Baby to the Beach
Ok, so maybe an adorable beach towel isn't a necessity, but it will make for some cute pictures!
It doesn't take long for a baby's delicate skin to burn in the hot sun at the beach. Protective swimwear is a great idea to protect your little one from sun damage.
If your baby will leave it on, a protective sun hat is a great idea. The sun just seems brighter at the beach. With a protective sun hat, it will be easier on your baby's eyes and protect your baby's face and head from the sun. (Especially if your little one is lacking in the hair department.) 🙂
It's so important to choose a natural, non-toxic mineral based sunscreen for your little one. You definitely want to avoid chemical based sunscreens at all cost. I recently wrote a post all about the sunscreen we use. You can read that here.
The sand at the beach can get SO HOT! It's a great idea to protect your baby's feet from the hot sand. If they are brave enough to venture into the ocean, these comfy water shoes will protect their sensitive feet from broken shells as well.
Swim Diapers are a must unless you want to take the risk of your little one leaving a deposit in the great big ocean. If you are looking for a more natural option, check out these re-usable swim diapers here. They are super cute!
Yes, to have an enjoyable beach vacation with your baby, you need to keep them entertained. So don't forget the sand toys!
Investing in a large sun shade or shelter will make your life so much easier at the beach. This gives your little one a cool area to hang out away from the hot sun.
This is by far the one thing that has salvaged our last 2 beach vacations when my daughter hated the ocean and the sand. All you need is a cheap blow-up pool and a few minutes to haul some ocean water to fill it up. Pure. Genius.
Once again, if your baby will leave them on, a cool pair of baby sunglasses will protect his eyes from the bright sun.
Even if your accommodations are right on the beach, you
might will need something to transport all of your gear to the beach. A beach wagon will make your life so much easier, trust me.
Of course, it really goes without saying that you will need a cooler for your beach vacation. I love this backpack cooler because it will leave you a free hand to carry the rest of your gear.
