At this very moment, I am writing this post all wrapped up in a blanket with a heater blowing on me. It is exactly 10 degrees outside with a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground.
Just looking out my window at the beauty of God's creation creates such a calmness in my spirit.
But unfortunately, if I my daughter was throwing a fit, I don't think plopping her in front of the window is going to have the same effect. 🙂
That's why it is such a blessing to have other options for those, out of control moments, that all of our children have.
Unless your children are always calm, well mannered and sweet…
So what do you do if you are out and about and your little one needs to calm down?
Or they're in a strange place and refuse to take a nap?
Here are 3 Ways to Calm Your Child Wherever You Are:
1. Apply a calming essential oil roll-on blend.
Where you apply the roll-on depends on the age of your child. Generally for small children you want to make sure they can't accidentally rub it in their eyes or get it in their mouth. So the bottom of the feet and then applying socks, or on the back are great options.
For older children, applying to the wrists or behind the ears are great options.
Make sure that you follow safe dilution guidelines when applying essential oils to children. This Roll-on Dilution Graphic is a great tool to reference when making roll-ons.

2. Apply a few drops of essential oils to a diffuser bracelet or necklace.
This idea is brilliant and easy, which I love. If your child will wear a diffuser necklace or bracelet, you can just put a few drops of calming essential oils on the necklace or bracelet. Then just let the oils do their thing!

3. Put a drop of essential oils on their clothes.
If you are using a calming essential oil and don't have a roll-on, bracelet or necklace, just put a drop or two on their clothing. Keep in mind, though, some essential oils can stain, so putting on an inconspicuous place is a good idea.
Also, you want to avoid putting the oil on a place where it will come in contact with the skin to avoid any possibly irritation.
For babies, consider applying the calming essential oils to you, and then just holding the baby and letting the aromatherapy work that way. This is a great, safe way for enjoying the calming benefits of oils with babies!
Which Essential Oils Can I Use:
So these ideas I've shared are great, but the real question is:
Which essential oils are calming and safe to use on your child?
A quick search on Google will bring up a whole bunch of posts about calming essential oils and what to use. But don't trust everything you read on the internet. I am going to share a few ideas for you, but I highly recommend you buy a reference guide to have on hand.
I reference this book all of the time, “Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child“. Valerie breaks down the safe essential oils for your children by their age leaving no question what you can and can't use. She is very cautious in her recommendations which I appreciate.
Calming Essential Oils and Blends
These are a few calming essential oils that work wonders:
Lavender (Generally safe for babies on up)
Mandarin (Generally safe for babies on up)
Roman Chamomile (Generally safe for babies on up)
Geranium (Generally safe for babies on up)
Peace & Calming Blend (Generally safe for children over 2)
Important: When using essential oils on and around children, please make sure you are using pure essential oils. Buying pure, unadulterated oils from a reputable source will put your mind at ease that you are not exposing your children to residual pesticides, solvents or any other nasty chemicals.
And of course adulterated oils will not give you the health benefits you are looking for.
