The month of April is Earth month. A nice time to think about what we can do to reduce waste and do our part to create a better earth.
I love being a mom and feel so blessed to have a little girl. My sons are awesome, but they are older and like to do their own thing.
So when I was blessed with my daughter I was so excited! I couldn't wait to dress her in frilly dressy and put hair bows in her hair! All of the fun things we get to do with little girls.
But I have run into a few problems with the hair bows and hair ties.
- I can never find them when I need them…
- The ones I do keep track of a a jumbled mess in the bathroom drawer…
Seriously, I buy tons of hair bows, and yet, I can never find them when I need them.
So for earth month and the #LessWasteChallenge I was inspired to up-cycle an item and create something unique.
And I have to tell you I am so excited with this simple up-cycled project that is going to make my life so much easier!
The Materials: What You Need
I have been using Tom's of Maine Natural Body Washes for a while now and I love them. As someone with super sensitive skin, their body washes are so gentle on my skin. I love that Tom's of Maine's Natural Personal Care Products contain:
- No Artificial Fragrances
- No Artificial Colors
- No Artificial Flavors
- No Artificial Preservatives
Not only that, but their packaging is recyclable through TerraCycle. So for this project, I am using 2 empty body wash containers.
Hair Accessory Organizer Instructions
The steps to create these adorable organizers are really simple.
- Soak your bottles for a few minutes in hot soapy water to loosen the labels, then remove.
- For any residual sticky residue, a few drops of lemon oil will take it right off.
- Wash and let bottles dry inside and out
Once your bottles are dry you will need a sharp knife or scissors. This first bottle will hold your hair bows.
- FOR ONE BOTTLE ONLY: Carefully cut in 2, 1/2″ inch slits about 1/2″ apart from each other in your bottle.
- Then do this 5 more times down the bottle. Depending on the size of your bows, you can add as many slits at you need.
For the second bottle, no cutting is necessary. Simply add all of your hair bands to the bottle.
I considered painting the bottles, but with the friction from adding and removing the bows and bands, I don't think it would last long.
I don't think they need it, they are so bright and cheerful without it!
You will probably want to add some weight to the bottles like some rocks or sand. I added some rocks to the bottom of my bottles to give them some stability.
Aren't they so CUTE?!
