There's just something about nature that is so inspiring. Walking outside and smelling the scent of the trees and flowers. Just the way it was intended to be. These plants and botanicals were made specifically for us. They serve a purpose to support our health, to lift our spirits and calm our minds.
When these pure plants and botanicals are blended into natural products, we get the best of both worlds…
New Tom's of Maine Body Washes & Bar Soaps
We all want to smell good, right? One of the first things I eliminated when transitioning to a chemical-free lifestyle was fragrances. Artificial fragrances were ditched, but the thing was, I still wanted to smell good. Tom’s of Maine's new body washes and soaps give you the option to still smell good naturally, which is awesome!
Their new items are inspired by nature and include rich botanicals to cleanse and soothe the skin. And they smell good!! These new items come in a few varieties including:
- Creamy Coconut
- Lavender Tea Tree
- Fragrance Free Sensitive

Natural, Soothing Ingredients
I am a lover of all things natural, so I was curious to learn what ingredients were found in these new products. I purchased the Creamy Coconut & Fragrance Free Sensitive body washes.
1. Creamy Coconut Body Wash
I love that Tom's of Maine is completely transparent with their ingredients. All of the ingredients in the Creamy Coconut Body Wash are listed on the Target website. It includes virgin coconut oil while using essential oils and extracts for the fragrance.
2. Fragrance Free Sensitive
If I haven't mentioned it before, I have extremely sensitive skin. Pretty much anything and everything break me out and make me itch. So the fragrance free sensitive body wash is a great option for me.
If I really want a little scent, I can add my own essential oils that I know my skin can tolerate. This is a great option to use for my kids as well.
What Tom's of Maine Soaps & Body Washes Don't Have
We've talked about the ingredients that make Tom’s of Maine's new soaps and body washes so good. But it's just as important to talk about what they don't have. Conventional soaps and body washes are chock full of chemicals and ingredients that are anything but natural. These ingredients have a long list of side effects including skin irritation, asthma, allergies and some are even known carcinogens (cancer causers).
So let's talk about three big offenders that Tom's of Maine doesn't include in their soaps and body washes.
1. No Artificial Fragrances
Ever wonder why fragrances give people heachaches? “Fragrance” is such a simple word and it sounds so innocent, but according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics fragrances often contain dozens or even hundreds of synthetic chemical compounds. Some of the chemicals found in fragrances are cocamide dea (as a detergent), acetone, ethanol, propylene glycol (industrial antifreeze), and sodium lauryl sulfate. Some of the side effects of these fragrances when inhaled include various respiratory irritations such as asthma, allergies and headaches. And that's just to name a few… I love that Tom's of Maine chooses to use safer alternatives to chemical fragrances including botanical fragrances made from raw materials obtained from nature. They also offer a Fragrance Free body wash for those with extreme sensitivities.
2. No Sulfates
Sodium lauryl sulfate is found in a large amount of personal care products. It is used as a cleansing agent and helps create that foaming lather. Unfortunately it can cause irritation to the skin, eyes or lungs. I can't tell you how many times I have used products in the past and gotten out of the shower with red, itchy skin. It's not fun.
3. No Parabens
Parabens are found in a variety of products, especially cosmetics. According to Arthur Rich, Ph.D. “About 85 percent of cosmetics have them.” They can also be found in shaving creams, shampoos, lotions, and even in tanning products.
Parabens are most common in personal care products that contain significant amounts of water, such as shampoos, conditioners, lotions and facial and shower cleansers and scrubs, in order to discourage the growth of microbes.Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
Parabens have been known to cause endocrine disruption and they disrupt hormone function. Some parabens have the ability to somewhat mimic the hormone estrogen. High exposure to estrogen has been linked to the development of breast cancer. Parabens have even been found inside some cancerous tumors.

I hear that! I primarily make soaps & other bath and body products. But there are times I just buy a bar of soap or some lip balm from the store. I just don’t feel like dragging out all the equipment to DIY all the time. And I sure don’t feel like cleaning all the stuff required for soap making. Good post – thank you 😊
