Finding hand soap in the store that smells good, isn't full of harsh chemicals and reacts well with all different skin types can be a bit of a challenge. Not impossible, but more challenging most times than not.
And trust me, I've spent hours walking up and down the soap aisles in the stores searching and reading and comparing…hours.
While I'm not against buying store-bought soaps, my research has shown me that there are some that can have less than desirable ingredients in them that I'd rather not put on mine or my family's skin.

Ingredients such as “fragrance” which is actually a super-vague word that gives the consumer the feeling of smelling all nice and clean, without actually even knowing what chemicals make up the composite of “fragrance.” Interesting, right?

As a consumer, my mind was pretty much made up right then and there that I was going to find a way to make my own soap. I couldn't stand that thought that there were chemicals I was using on my skin when it's so super simple to make homemade soap full of ingredients that I know and trust.
My personal motto?
If I can't say it, pronounce it, or have no clue even what it is, then I know that I don't want it being applied on, or coming near me and my family.
After doing my research on store-bought soaps and always coming up empty-handed, I decided that I was going to venture into the world of making my own natural foaming hand soap.
And guess what? It's super simple!

Does this mixture separate? I wouldn't mind giving it a swirl, but my adult children, not so much! I know glycerin is added to bubble solutions, and is also a moisturizer; would it help with the drying issues if added to this soap?

Give it a gently swirl and it mixes and should not separate. I add 2 tsp vegetable glycerin to my home made hand soap to help moisturize my hands.

Hi Geraldine. You can definitely use lemon essential oil. I have a friend that always uses lemon in her handsoap. You can actually use any skin friendly essential oil that you like. :)

I've made this natural foaming hand soap several times but have found it to be *extremely* drying to my hands. I am constantly washing my hands as I am constantly cleaning house, dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, doing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, handling my cats and cleaning litter boxes. The list is endless. Maybe I am germ and dirt-o-phobic, but I don't want to rub that stuff on my face, in my eyes, hair, clothes, etc. So, besides the soap being drying to begin with, it is excessively so with my obsessive compulsive hand-washing. I really want to use this natural foaming DIY handsoap but am wondering if there is another safe, effective ingredient I can add to make it moisturizing as well as not gumming up the soap dispenser so it doesn't work. I also like the idea of making it anti-bacterial, so the tea trea oil and lavender sound like useful additions, except I am not certain how those scents would blend with lemon grass, which is so refreshing and which I love. Do you have any ideas on how I can do this, as well as amounts of other ingredients I should use?

Hi there! You could try adding 2 teaspoons of fractionated coconut oil or your favorite carrier oil. I think this would help with the dryness.

Hello! I love this idea! To make it more antibacterial, would a few drops of tea tree oil work?

You can definitely play around with the essential oils. That would work just fine!
