Soothing Baby Diaper Rash Cream with Calendula and Lavender

Sharing is caring!

Diaper rash can be so frustrating and upsetting to you and your baby. However, chances are that as parents, we’re going to deal with it at some point. The good news it, you can skip those store bought diaper creams and make your own Soothing Baby Diaper Rash Cream that works!

One year when my daughter was a baby, she had the WORST diaper rash I had ever seen. And on top of that, we went on a beach vacation that year.

I just remember feeling so bad that nothing I tried helped.

And the beach, the sand and the water just made things worse.

Is Diaper Rash Cream Necessary?

If your baby is experiencing a diaper rash or is prone to developing diaper rashes, then yes, diaper rash cream is absolutely necessary.

However, even if the baby isn’t experiencing a diaper rash, diaper rash cream can help prevent diaper rash by forming a barrier on the skin that protects baby's delicate diaper area.

Having this barrier will keep the acidity from the baby’s waste from touching the skin, where it’s prone to cause irritations.

Is Diaper Rash Cream Safe?

You would think that if a product is being marketed for caring for a baby that it would automatically be safe. However, this just isn’t the case.

Many baby care items, baby diaper rash cream included, are full of harmful chemicals.

Some of diaper rash cream ingredients in commercial diaper rash creams are talc, fragrance, parabens, petrolatum, butylated hydroxyanisole, or BHA, and paraffin.

Many of these ingredients are known or suspected carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Ingredients such as petrolatum and paraffin essentially seal the skin and don’t allow toxins to be passed out of the skin.

When to Use Diaper Cream

If your baby is currently suffering from or is prone to developing diaper rashes, it is wise to use the diaper rash cream at every diaper change.

If your baby isn’t prone to developing diaper rashes and currently does not have a diaper rash, then using diaper rash cream at least once per day (preferably before bed) will still help to keep the barrier around baby’s skin to prevent rashes.

Should Diaper Rash Cream Burn?

No. Never. Any product you’re using on baby’s delicate skin should be gentle and soothing. If you notice any irritation or baby is acting uncomfortable after using any baby care product, diaper rash cream included, immediately discontinue its use.

When to Stop Using Diaper Rash Cream:

You should immediately stop using any diaper rash cream (or other baby care product, for that matter) if you notice signs of irritation or the baby acts like they’re in discomfort.

Otherwise, you’re free to use diaper rash cream for as long as you want. As your baby is getting older and getting into the potty-training stage, you may find that you don’t need to use diaper rash cream at all.

How to Make Diaper Rash Cream

Diaper rash cream is easy and simple to make at home with just a handful of natural ingredients and common household kitchen equipment. The recipe we’re giving you today is full of ingredients that will nourish and soothe baby’s delicate skin.

Sweet Almond oil, jojoba oil, and hemp seed oil are all wonderful to help the skin retain moisture, hydrate dry skin, and heal and/or prevent diaper rash.

The addition of Lavender essential oil helps soothe skin irritations, nourish the skin, and provide a nice, delicate scent to the diaper rash cream.
