Sharing is caring!

This homemade soothing shea butter baby balm is perfect for your baby's dry skin. You'll love the way this baby balm soothes and heals leaving your little one's skin soft and smooth!

So it's been a few years since I had a baby, but lately so many of my relatives have been having babies.

Because of this I was inspired to share some all natural baby recipes to celebrate!

And first on the list is this soothing, healing balm I am sharing today.

Soothing Shea Butter Baby Balm

Before we dive into this awesome recipe, let's first talk about what baby balm truly is.

What is Baby Balm?

You’ve probably heard the words “baby balm” at some point, but maybe you didn’t know exactly what it was.

Simply put, baby balm is a moisturizing, healing agent that tends to be thicker than a typical lotion or cream.

Because it is thicker than your average lotion, it’s going to do a better job in protecting the skin and holding moisture in.

These body butter recipes, are great to have on hand through the fall and winter as well. This healing body butter is one of my favorites!

When to Use Baby Balm:

Baby lying down with feet and legs showing.

Baby balm is a great choice when your sweet baby has a skin condition, has super dry skin, and especially during the cold, winter months where baby’s delicate skin is more prone to drying out.

The shea butter balm recipe we’ll be talking about a little later on in this post is ideal for making a soothing balm to nourish and protect your little one’s skin.

A great bonus of making your own baby balm is that you can fully customize it to your liking, and it’s great for the whole family to use. I especially like to use these thicker balm recipes during the winter months when skin can generally use a little extra TLC.

The recipe I’ll be giving you later on the in the post is chocked full of skin-loving ingredients, let’s take a look at some of their benefits now.

Shea Butter Benefits for the Skin:

Shea nuts and shea butter in a bowl on a table.

Shea butter comes from the Shea Tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), which is native to Africa.

  • It’s highly moisturizing, can decrease skin inflammation, relieve itchy and dry skin, soothes the skin, and is soothing to diaper rash.
  • Shea butter is high in fatty acids and contains vitamins A and E, which offer even more skin nourishing benefits.
  • Shea butter absorbs quickly, making it an ideal butter to use on the skin.

Shea butter has a very delicate scent to it, making it ideal to use in recipes where you’ll be adding essential oils.

Many butters have stronger scents to them making it necessary to use a high amount of essential oils in your recipe to be able to smell anything other than the scent of the butter (cocoa butter is a great example of this).

However, with shea butter’s delicate scent, you’re able to use much less essential oil and still experience the great scents that the essential oils add to your recipe.

Shea butter is the main ingredient in this awesome lotion recipe as well.

Rose Hip Seed Oil

Rose hip oil is moisturizing and promotes the healing of the skin.

This is a powerhouse oil for anti-aging as well. This anti-aging face serum uses Rosehip Seed Oil as its base.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is high in fatty acids and is highly nourishing and moisturizing to the skin.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has many skin benefits including soothing irritations, alleviating itching and redness, and nourishing the skin. It is also a super gentle essential oil, making it ideal to use in baby care products.

I've put together 7 lavender skincare recipes I love here.

Palmarosa Essential Oil

Palmarosa is very hydrating for the skin. It decreases inflammation, promotes skin healing, and balances the skin’s natural sebum production.

Tips to Make this shea butter baby balm WOW!

  • Add 1 drop Helichrysum essential oil in place of one of the drops of Lavender.

Helichrysum loves skin. It’s great for helping the skin to retain moisture and is a powerhouse when it comes to dealing with any type of skin irritations such as rashes and bruises. Helichrysum can help support the body in repairing damaged skin and is very soothing.

  •  Infuse oil with 1 tsp chickweed and 1 tsp calendula (water bath method) for 1 hour and strain before returning to water bath and adding wax to melt.

Adding in skin-loving herbs such as chickweed and/or calendula can take this recipe to the next level. Not only will you experience all of the soothing and healing properties of the ingredients in the original recipe, but you’ll also get the added benefits of the herbs.
